Degussa’s Marzan Runs Marathon, Raises $2,300 For Cancer Research

Local Athlete Turns His Pain Into Society’s Gain By Raising Money For Charity

PARSIPPANY, N.J., September 5, 2007 – Degussa Corporation’s Pete Marzan has raised more than $2,300 for the area chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by completing the recent San Francisco Marathon.

That brings to $10,000 the total contributions Marzan has raised for the Society since 2000 by participating in numerous marathons around the country.

Sandra Curado, Director, Team In Training, for the Northern N.J. Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Westfield, praised the generosity, spirit, and dedication of athletes like Marzan.

“Pete and other participants who raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are helping to fund our research,” said Curado. “Our goal is not only to improve on research but also to improve the quality of life for our patients and their families. Thanks to people like Pete, we’re able to do that.”

John Rolando, president of Degussa Corporation, said he was extremely proud of employees like Marzan who generously give of themselves.

“Degussa employees have a history of generously giving of their time and talents to make positive contributions to their communities,” said Rolando. “Pete exemplifies our corporate culture – that of giving back to the community.”

Marzan said he tries to do what he can for those less fortunate. “I enjoy running and it’s important for me to help raise funds for organizations such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” said Marzan.

Last month Marzan, Senior Logistics Specialist at Parsippany, N.J. based Degussa who has participated in 16 marathons since 1983, ran the 26.2-mile San Francisco Marathon in an impressive 3 hours and 21 minutes. “It feels really great, not only to run the marathon but to raise funds for cancer research,” said Marzan.

Marzan, who earned a track scholarship and graduated Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1980, said he couldn’t have raised the funds without the continuing support of Degussa and his colleagues and friends.

“People have been incredibly generous,” said Marzan. “Cancer affects so many people, so we must promote awareness. I am fortunate that I can make a contribution through my ability to run marathons.”

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, headquartered in White Plains, NY, with 68 chapters in the United States and Canada, is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $550 million in research specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
