Responsible Care® A Public Commitment

As the world’s leading specialty chemical company, Degussa is committed to the Responsible Care® program, the global initiative of the chemical industry to protect its employees, communities and the environment, along with its new security component. As an international company, Degussa concentrates on chemistry that affords everyone the opportunity to live easier, safer and more enjoyable lives.

Some examples of our efforts in North America include:

  • Our Mobile, Alabama, facility’s participation in the Cogon grass research partnership with Auburn University, which benefits the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and the Alabama Dept. of Transportation.
  • Our carbon black plants in Borger and Orange, Texas, operate “cogeneration” plants that produce electricity using the gases created in the carbon black production process, conserving natural resources while simultaneously reducing emissions.
  • Our discussions with the Nature Conservancy regarding the management of the Mobile site’s wetlands to promote the return of the “Grand Bay Ecosystem.”
  • The Degussa Recycle Center in Mobile - This project is essential in the Mobile facility meeting its waste minimization goals, by recycling items such as pallets, nickel/cadmium batteries, alkaline batteries, carbon steel, stainless steel, copper wire, aluminum wire and sheet aluminum, as well as paper and cardboard. In 2003, approximately 666,244 pounds of material were recycled, and the facility is currently constructing a second center that will result in even greater results for the future.
